CHAPTER 55.

An Act to amend The Vehicles and Highway Traffic
Act, 1924.

(Assented to April 8, 1926.)

HIS MAJESTY, by and with the advice and consent of the Legislative Assembly of the Province of Alberta,

enacts as follows:

1. This Act may be cited as "The Vehicles and Highway Short title Traffic Act, 1924, Amendment Act, 1926."

2. The Vehicles and Highway Traffic Act, 1924, being Section 49 chapter 31 of the Statutes of Alberta, 1924, is amended as to section 49 by adding thereto as subsection (1a) thereof, immediately after subsection (1), the following:

"(1a) Where two persons in charge of vehicles approach a crossroad or intersection at the same time, the person on the right hand of the other vehicle shall have the right of way."

3. Section 58a is added to the said Act as follows: "58a. No driver of a motor vehicle shall, after being signalled or requested to stop by a constable or police officer in uniform, continue to proceed, but shall bring his vehicle to a dead stop and furnish such information respecting the said vehicle as the constable or police officer may require."

4. Section 62 of the said Act is amended as to paragraph Section 62 (e) of subsection (2) thereof by striking out the word and figures "section 59" and substituting therefor the word and figures "section 60."

5. This Act shall come into force on the day upon which Coming into it is assented to.

CHAPTER 56.

An Act to amend The Department of Education Act.

(Assented to April 8, 1926.)

HIS MAJESTY, by and with the advice and consent of

the Legislative Assembly of the Province of Alberta,

enacts as follows:

1. This Act may be cited as "The Department of Educa- Short title tion Act Amendment Act, 1926."

2. The Department of Education Act, being chapter 16 of Section 9 the Revised Statutes of Alberta, 1922, is amended as to section 9 thereof by striking out subsections (1) and (2) and substituting therefor the following:

"(1) The Minister shall have power to print and publish school books, and shall also have power to purchase school books and books for school library purposes, and school supplies, and to sell the same to school districts or teachers or other persons, or supply the same to school libraries as provided in The School Grants Act.

"(2) Upon the requisition of the Minister, the Provincial Treasurer may, from time to time, advance, out of the general revenue fund, such sums of money as may be required to pay for the printing and publishing or purchase of such books and for the purchase of such school supplies or for the payment of premiums upon the bonds of treasurers of school districts:

"Provided that the net amount of such advance shall not at any time exceed the sum of one hundred and fifty thousand dollars."

CHAPTER 57.

An Act to amend The School Act.

(Assented to April 8, 1926.)

HIS MAJESTY, by and with the advice and consent of the Legislative Assembly of the Province of Alberta, enacts as follows:

1. This Act may be cited as "The School Act Amendment Act, 1926."

2. The School Act, being chapter 51 of the Revised Statutes of Alberta, 1922, is amended by striking out section 48 thereof and substituting therefor the following:

"48.-(1) In the event of the full number of trustees allocated to any consolidated school district under the provisions of this Act, being an even number, an additional trustee shall be elected at the annual meeting, who shall hold office until the next annual meeting.

"(2) Nominations for the office of additional trustee shall be received by the chairman of the annual meeting during the thirty minutes immediately before the adjournment of that meeting, under the provisions of section 51 of this Act. "(3) No person shall be nominated unless he is

"(a) a British subject;

"(b) able to read and write; and

"(c) a resident ratepayer of one of the districts included in the consolidated district.

"(4) The election of the additional trustee shall be carried on at the same time and in the same manner as the election to fill the other vacancies at the annual meeting, except that a separate ballot box and separate ballot papers shall be prepared and used for such election, and the chairman and secretary of the annual meeting shall perform all the duties of the chairman and secretary of the meeting of resident ratepayers of a single district, and those qualified to vote at such election shall be the resident ratepayers of all the districts included in the consolidated district.

"(5) In the case of the office of additional trustee becoming vacant otherwise than by effluxion of time, the election of a trustee to fill such vacancy shall be held only at a special meeting of the resident ratepayers of all the districts included in the consolidated district, called for that purpose, and in the same manner as at the annual meeting:
