PREFACE

The Committee on the Judiciary is pleased to make available once again a compilation of the Civil Rights Acts since 1957, including the Voting Rights Act of 1965 as amended.

There has been a continuing interest in civil rights issues among private citizens as well as community organizations. To facilitate a better understanding of these issues, the Committee has compiled for public use this updated version of the Committee Print published first in 1960 and revised in 1970, 1975 and 1981.

Bracketed notes following a number of sections or other subdivisions make reference to public laws which have from time to time amended the original Acts—such amendments are fully integrated into the text. Also set forth in bracketed notes following each section are citations to the corresponding sections of the United States Code. Portions of compiled Acts which amend other laws are not included, but they are briefly described.

Any recommendations as to ways in which subsequent compilations may be enhanced should be forwarded directly to the Committee.
