Dissatisfaction of the wine growers in southern France with the government for not legislating in their behalf and restoring their industry to its former prosperity led to serious disorders in May and June, 1907. Mass meetings attended by thousands were held in the cities of Narbonne, Perpignan, Montpellier and Florensac, at which speak. ers demanded that measures be taken for suppressing the adulteration of wine in Paris and for otherwise protecting them from unfair competition. Under the leadership of a wine grower named Marcellin Albert of Argelliers they sent word to Pre mier Clemenceau that unless their requests were complied with they would refuse to pay taxes. This threat they carried into effect and on the 10th of June many of the mayors and city councils resigned as a protest. Troops finally were rushed into the disaffected districts, some arrests were made and a few mobs dispersed. The leaders were placed in prison, but only for a short time, as the uprising quickly subsided. Several laws intended to make the lot of the wine growers more tolerable were passed subsequently by the chamber of deputies. Headquarters-1301 NATIONAL POLITICAL COMMITTEES (1904-1908).
