1. ON toddled Little Red Riding Hood. In a short time she came to her grandma's cottage, and tapped at the door. 66 Who's there?" cried the wolf, in a queer, gruff voice. "It's only Little Red Riding Hood, and I have brought you some nice cake and jam from mother." 2. Then said the wolf, " Lift the latch, my dear, and the bolt will fall." So Little Red Riding Hood did as she was bid, and in she went. 3. Now the wolf hid his head under the bed-clothes, and told her to put the cake and the pot of jam in the cupboard. 4. Little Red Riding Hood did as she was told. Then she drew back the curtain and folded down the bed-clothes. How it was her grandma had got so ugly she could n't make out. Dear me ! 5. Little Red Riding Hood. Grandma, what long arms you have! Wolf. The better to hug you, my dear. 6. Little Red Riding Hood. But, grandma, what long ears you have! Wolf. The better to hear you, my pet. 7. Little Red Riding Hood. But, grandma, what great eyes you have! But, grand Wolf. The better to see you, my child. 8. Little Red Riding Hood. ma, what big teeth you have! "The better to eat you up," said the wolf, as he got ready to spring upon her. 9. But at that moment, a wasp that had followed Little Red Riding Hood into the cottage, stung the wolf on the nose, so that he sneezed and sneezed again. 10. Then a little tomtit that was sitting on the window-sill, when he heard this, said, "Tweat, tweat! Then a huntsman, hearing the tweat, tweat, let fly his arrow at the tomtit. But it chanced to strike the wolf through the heart, and so killed him on the spot. XXVIII. THE TRUTHFUL BOY. al'ways curl'y 0 NCE there did live a little boy, And never told a lie. 2. And when he trotted off to school, The children all would cry, "There goes the curly-headed boy Who never tells a lie." 3. And everybody loved him so, Because he told the truth, That every day as he grew up, They called him "honest youth." 4. And when the people that stood near Would ask the reason why, The answer would be always this, 1. All the earth is full of music, Little May, Bird, and bee, and water singing Let their silver voices fall On thy heart with happy call: 1. DID you ever see a chicken just hatched? Why, it is one of the prettiest little things in the world, with its bright little eyes and sleek body; but the prettiest thing about it is, that it looks exactly like an egg covered over with feathers. 2. It has a tiny bill in front, and a pair of little legs that can hardly be seen at all. Indeed, when they first leave the nest, the little chicks look like feathered eggs running about. |
