Mark L. McMakin was arrested September, 1849, for killing a man named Ryan.

John Henry murdered his wife, and then killed himself, September, 1851.

Bryan Shay killed Patrick Donohoe, October 29, 1855.

A man named Neilan was killed in a drunken brawl, on the 4th of July, 1856. Three men were charged with the crime, named, John Sharkley, James Murrack and Patrick Dwyer. The charge could not be substanciated, however, and they were released.

No. 11

William Henry Sinnard was killed, August, 1856. A woman of bad reputation named Martha Brees was arrested for the murder. On her preliminary trial, it was

proved that Sinnard was beating her with a club, and that she stabbed him in self-defence. She was accord-· ingly acquitted.

No. 12

Leonard Wesmeyer killed John Schwank with a knife, August 18, 1856. Convicted, and sent to State's prison.

Daniel Ruoff was killed with a club. November 16th, 1857. Bernhardt Miller was accused of the crime, was

indicted, tried and acquitted.

Henry Ogle killed Henry Bridger.

Peter Ballot killed Peter Sponenberger. Ballot was not prosecuted, having compromised the case with Sponenberger's family.

E. M. Best killed Peter Ballot with a knife, Augus 28, 1860. Best was not prosecuted, having compromised the case with Ballot's wife for a sum of money.

John Iglebert killed Randal Moore, October 10, 1857.

No. 18

Andrew Cullers killed James Pringle, July 12, 1857. These men were working with a thrashing machine, on Mrs. Shank's farm, four miles south of Hamilton. A dispute arose, hard words were exchanged, and while Pringle was in a stooping position, Cullers kicked him on the head, from the effect of which he died. Cullers was tried for manslaughter, convicted and sent to prison for a term of one year. We might hear state that at the same term of Court, a man named Willis was tried for killing a cow, and sent to prison for a term of two years. It would seem that in those days the killing of a cow was regarded as a more heinous offence than the sacrifice of a human life.

William Rhinehart, James and Frank Cozad were indicted for manslaughter for killing a mam named Selby, June, 1858. This occurred near Middletown, Butler county. They were acquitted.

William Little killed Gotleib Blonz, August, 1857

This occurred in Middletown.

No. 21

Samuel L'Hommedieu killed a German saloon keeper named Earnest Hading, in his saloon, with a mallet, December, 1865. No arrest.

No. 22

William Harrold killed Henry Hilker in 1865. These were boys. Harrold was tried and sent to the reform farm.

John Griffin killed Henry Winkle, November 18, 1864.

This occurred at a German ball in Hamilton.

Griffin was

indicted, but secured his release by joining the Union

Dr. S. H. Potter killed Jane Holmes while attempting to commit an abortion.

Hugh Hall shot and killed William Sheely. This appeared to be an accident, and Hall was not arrested.

John Rusk killed James Boswell by shooting him with a shot gun. Rusk was never brought to trial.

No. 28

Thomas S. Myers shot and killed John Ryan, April 6, 1864. So he was also charged with the murder of Ellen Pearson, in an attempt to procure abortion. In April, 1867, he shot and killed his brother, William Myers.

No. 29

Christian Peerson indicted for killing Bernard J. Connaughton, September, 1863. This occurred at Oxford. He was acquitted.
