House bill No. 574, entitled

A bill to amend sections 2 and 3 of Act No. 400 of the Local Acts of the State of Michigan for the year 1899, entitled "An Act to provide for the payment of a salary to certain township officers in the Township of Springwells, in the County of Wayne, and to fix the salaries thereof."

The motion prevailed.

Mr. Holmes moved that all further proceedings under the call be dispensed with.

The following communication from the Deputy Secretary of State was received, read, and ordered spread on the Journal:

To the President of the Senate:

DEPARTMENT of State,
Lansing, May 2, 1901.

Sir-In a communication to the Senate from this department this afternoon, in compliance with a resolution of the Senate, it was stated that

the total cost of printing the reports of the State Board of Health for the past five years, was, in round numbers, nineteen thousand dollars, these figures having been obtained from the Clerk of the State Board of Auditors, and from the office of the Auditor General.

I have since found that this statement was in error in that the amount named is the total allowance made on account of all printing for the State Board of Health, including not only the printing of the annual reports, but all other printing of that department.

The cost of the printing of the annual reports of the board for the different years was as follows:

Mr. Lockerby asked and obtained leave of absence for himself from the sessions of tomorrow and Monday.

Mr. Sleeper asked and obtained leave of absence for himself from the remainder of today's session, and from tomorrow's session.

Mr. Atwood asked and obtained leave of absence for himself from the remainder of today's session, and from tomorrow's session.

Mr. Doherty asked and obtained leave of absence for himself from the remainder of today's session, and from the sessions of tomorrow and Monday.

Mr. Bangham asked and obtained leave of absence for himself from the remainder of today's session, and from tomorrow's session.

Mr. Helme asked and obtained leave of absence for himself from the remainder of today's session, and from tomorrow's session.

Mr. Holmes asked and obtained leave of absence for himself from Monday's session.

Mr. Loomis moved that the Senate take a recess until 4:30 o'clock p. m.

A bill to amend the charter of the City of Grand Rapids; Respectfully report that they have had the same under consideration, and have directed me to report the bill back to the Senate with the accompanying substitute therefor, having the same title, recommending that the substitute be concurred in and that the bill, as substituted, do pass, and ask to be discharged from the further consideraion of the subject.

The report was accepted and the committee discharged. Mr. Loomis moved that the Senate concur in the adoption of the substitute reported by the committee.

Mr. Loomis moved that the rules be suspended and that the bill be placed on its immediate passage.

The motion prevailed, two-thirds of all the Senators present voting therefor.

The bill was then read a third time and passed, a majority of all the Senators elect voting therefor, by yeas and nays, as follows:

The motion prevailed, the time being 4:45 o'clock p. m., and the President declared the Senate adjourned until tomorrow at 8 o'clock a. m.

The President announced that there was not a quorum of the Senate present.

Mr. Kelly moved that the Senate adjourn.

The motion prevailed, the time being 8:10 o'clock a. m., and the Presdent declared the Senate adjourned until Monday, May 6, at 9 o'clock p. m.

The following message from the Governor was received and read:

Senate bill No. 496, being

An Act declaring St. Stephen's Evangelical Lutheran church of the City of Adrian, Michigan, incorporated April 5, 1901, the corporate successor of a similar corporation of the same name incorporated about 36 years ago, and validating all Acts of the officers of the old corporation, and transferring its property to the said new corporation.

Resolved, That the members of the Senate committee appointed to attend the funeral of Hon. Rosseau O. Crump, be and they are hereby allowed ten dollars each for expenses incurred.

Mr. Doherty moved to discharge the committee of the whole from the further consideration of

Senate bill No. 373 (file No. 191), entitled

A bill for the preservation of the public health in the townships traversed by the middle branch of the Tobacco river and its tributaries, west of the eastern boundary of the Township of Arthur, Clare county, Michigan, and defining the duties of the health officers of said townships.

The motion prevailed.

Mr. Doherty moved that the bill be referred to the Committee on Public Health.
