2 Yes, thou art precious to my soul,
My transport and my trust;
Jewels to thee are gaudy toys,
And gold is sordid dust.

3 All my capacious powers can wish,
In thee doth richly meet;
Nor to mine eyes is light so dear,
Nor friendship half so sweet.

4 Thy grace still dwells upon my heart,
And sheds its fragrance there;
The noblest balm of all its wounds,
The cordial of its care.

5 I'll speak the honours of thy name
With my last labouring breath;

Then, speechless, clasp thee in mine arms,
The antidote of death.

THE NAME OF JESUS.

C. M.

Glencairn-New York-Harborough.

1 How sweet the name of Jesus sounds
In a believer's ear!

It soothes his sorrows, heals his wounds,
And drives away his fear.

2 It makes the wounded spirit whole,
And calms the troubled breast;
"Tis manna to the hungry soul,
And to the weary rest.

3 Dear name! the rock on which I build,
My shield and hiding-place;
My never-failing treasury, filled
With boundless stores of grace.

4 By thee my prayers acceptance gain,
Although with sin defiled;

Satan accuses me in vain,

And I am owned a child.

5 Jesus! my Shepherd, Husband, Friend,
My Prophet, Priest, and King;
My Lord, my Life, my Way, my End,
Accept the praise I bring.

6 Weak is the effort of my heart,
And cold my warmest thought;
But when I see thee as thou art,
I'll praise thee as I ought.

7 Till then, I would thy love proclaim
With every fleeting breath;
And may the music of thy name
Refresh my soul in death.

THE NAME THAT IS ABOVE EVERY

NAME.

Chorlton Place.

This God is the God we adore,

8s. peculiar.

Our faithful, unchangeable Friend; Whose love is as great as his power,

And knows neither measure nor end.

'Tis Jesus, the First and the Last,
Whose Spirit shall guide us safe home;
We'll praise him for all that is past,
And trust him for all that's to come.

A SONG OF SALVATION.

Knox-Sharon-Ludstone.

1 I will praise thee every day!
Now thine anger's turned away;
O how sweet the thoughts that rise
From the bleeding Sacrifice.

2 Now within the gospel field,
Wells of free salvation yield
Streams of life a plenteous store:
And my soul shall thirst no more.
3 Jesus is become at length
My salvation and my strength;
And his praises shall prolong,
While I live my cheerful song.

4 Praise ye, then, his glorious name;
Publish his exalted fame;

Still his worth your praise exceeds;
Excellent are all his deeds.

5 Raise again the joyful sound;
Let the nations roll it round;
Zion, shout, for this is he,
God, the Saviour, dwells in thee.

"VENI, CREATOR."
Eaton-Dresden-Mendelssohn.

1 Creator Spirit! by whose aid

L. M. 6 lines.

The world's foundations first were laid,
Come, visit every humble mind;
Come, pour thy joys on all mankind;
From sin and sorrow set us free,
And make us temples worthy thee.

2 Thou strength of his almighty hand, Whose power does heaven and earth command,

Thrice holy Fount, thrice holy Fire,
Our hearts with heavenly love inspire;
Come, and thy sacred unction bring,
To sanctify us while we sing.

3 Plenteous of grace, descend from high,
Rich in thy sevenfold energy;
Give us thyself, that we may see
The Father and the Son by thee;
Make us eternal truths receive,
And practise all that we believe.
4 Immortal honour, endless fame,
Attend the almighty Father's name:
Let God the Son be glorified,
Who for lost man's redemption died:
And equal adoration be,
Eternal Comforter, to thee.

THE LORD AND GIVER OF LIFE.
Harrington-Burton-Messiah.

1 Come, Holy Spirit, from above,
With all thy quickening powers,
Kindle a flame of sacred love

In these cold hearts of ours.

2 See how on earth we grovelling lie,
Fond of these trifling toys;
Nor can we lift our souls on high,
To reach eternal joys.

3 In vain we tune our formal songs,
In vain we strive to rise;
Hosannas languish on our tongues,
And our devotion dies.

4 O Lord! and shall we ever be
In this poor dying state?
Our love so faint, so cold to thee,
And thine to us so great?

5 Come, Holy Spirit, from above,

With all thy quickening powers;
Come, shed abroad a Saviour's love,
And that shall kindle ours.

Come, Holy Spirit, come,
Let thy bright beams arise;
