The Senate met pursuant to adjournment and was called to order by the President.

Religious exercises were conducted by Fr. P. J. McSherry of St. Mary's Catholic Church of Lansing.

The roll of the Senate was called by the Secretary.

Present:

Senators Atwood, Bohn, Brower, Bernie L. Case, Condon, Connelly, Eldred, Gansser, Glaspie, Henry, Horton, Leland, MacNaughton, Pearson, Penney, Riopelle, Ross, Sligh, Smith, Truettner, Wilcox, Young-22; a quorum.

Absent with leave:

Senators Gettel, Johnson, Osborn and Whiteley-4.

Absent without leave:

Karcher and Wood-6.

Senators Bahorski, William L. Case, Hayes, Hunter,

Mr. Condon moved that the absentees without leave be excused from today's session.

The motion prevailed.

Presentation of Petitions.

Petition No. 136. By Mr. Gansser. Petition from Michigan Fraternal Congress favoring specific exemptions for Fraternal Beneficiary Societies in House Bill No. 87.

The petition was referred to the Committee on Insurance.

Petition No. 137. By Mr. Smith. Petition of Frances Scott and fifty-eight others of St. Clair County asking for the passage of a bill restricting the number of acres of land to be owned by hunting clubs.

The petition was referred to the Committee on Conservation.

Introduction of Bills.

Mr. Smith introduced

Senate bill No. 154, entitled

A bill to amend sections 14 and 31 of Act No. 169 of the Public Acts of 1913, entitled "An act to define what shall constitute fraternal beneficiary societies, orders or associations; to provide for their incorporation and the regulation of their business, and for the punishment for violations of this act, and to repeal all existing acts or parts of acts inconsistent therewith," being sections 9401 and 9420 of the Compiled Laws of 1915, as amended by Act No. 251 of the Public Acts of 1917, approved May 10, 1917, and to add three new sections to said act to stand as sections 14a, 14b and 14c.

The bill was read a first and second time by its title, and referred to the Committee on Insurance.

Motions and Resolutions.

Mr. Ross moved that when the Senate adjourns today it stand adjourned until tomorrow, Friday, February 23, at 9:00 o'clock a. m.

The motion prevailed.

Mr. MacNaughton moved that when the Senate adjourns tomorrow it stand adjourned until Monday, February 26, 1923, at 8:00 o'clock p. m.

The motion prevailed.

General Orders.

Mr. Atwood moved that the Senate resolve itself into Committee of the Whole for consideration of the general orders.

The motion prevailed and the President designated Mr. Atwood as chairman. Accordingly the Senate resolved itself into Committee of the Whole, with Mr. Atwood in the chair.

After some time spent therein the committee rose; and, the President having resumed the chair, the committee, through its chairman, reported that the committee had had under consideration several bills and had come to no resolution thereon.

Leaves of Absence.

Senators Bohn, Condon and Eldred asked and were granted leaves of absence until Monday, February 26, 1923.

Senators Atwood and Truettner asked and were granted indefinite leaves of absence.

Mr. Penney moved that the Senate adjourn.

The motion prevailed, the time being 10:21 o'clock a. m.

Accordingly, and in pursuance of the order previously made, the President declared the Senate adjourned until tomorrow, Friday, February 23, 1923, at 9:00 o'clock a. m.

The Senate met pursuant to adjournment and was called to order by Hon. Harvey A. Penney, Senator from the twenty-second district, whom the President had designated as temporary presiding officer for this day.

The roll of the Senate was called by the Secretary.

Present: Senators Connelly, Gansser, Henry, Leland, Pearson, Penney, Sligh— 7; not a quorum.

There were no absentees without leave.

Mr. Leland moved that the Senate adjourn.

The motion prevailed, the time being 9:08 o'clock a. m.

Accordingly, and in pursuance of the order previously made, the Presiding Officer declared the Senate adjourned until Monday, February 26, at 8:00 o'clock p. m.
