5 In every exigence appear,

Their very present aid;

Preserve from that which most they fear-
Thy cause by them betrayed.

6 Yet who is equal to the strife,
So arduous and so long?

Their strength be thou, O Lord, in life,
And thou in death, their song.

391.

THE WAITING CHURCH.

S. M. double

& chorus.

Waterbrook and Swabia (repeating last half
of tune for the chorus).

1 The church has waited long

Her absent Lord to see;

And still in loneliness she waits,

A friendless stranger she.

Age after age has gone,

Sun after sun has set,

And still, in weeds of widowhood,
She weeps a mourner yet.

Come then, Lord Jesus, come!

2 Saint after saint on earth

Has lived, and loved, and died,
And as they left us one by one,
We laid them side by side;
We laid them down to sleep,
But not in hope forlorn;

2 Gethsemane can I forget?
Or there thy conflict see,
Thine agony and bloody sweat,
And not remember thee?

3 When to the cross I turn mine eyes,
And rest on Calvary,

O Lamb of God, my sacrifice!

I must remember thee:

4 Remember thee, and all thy pains,
And all thy love to me;

Yea, while a breath, a pulse remains,
Will I remember thee.

5 And when these failing lips grow dumb, And mind and memory flee,

When thou shalt in thy kingdom come,
Jesus, remember me.

MORNING HYMN.

L.M.

Doversdale-Morning Hymn-Calcott.

1 Awake, my soul, and with the sun
The daily stage of duty run.
Shake off dull sloth, and joyful rise,
To pay the morning sacrifice.

2 Thy precious time, misspent, redeem;
Each present day, thy last esteem;
Improve thy talent with due care;
For the great day thyself prepare.

And make this blighted world of ours
Thine own fair world again.

Come then, Lord Jesus, come!

392. THE LORD'S SUPPER.

Glencairn-Burton-Prestwich.

C. M.

1 The King of heaven his table spreads,
And dainties crown the board;
Not paradise with all its joys
Could such delight afford.

2 Pardon and peace to dying men,
And endless life are given,

And the rich blood that Jesus shed,
To raise the soul to heaven.

3 Ye hungry poor, that long have strayed
In sin's dark mazes, come;
Come from the hedges and highways,
And grace shall find you room.

4 Millions of souls in glory now
Were fed and feasted here;
And millions more, still on the way,
Around the board appear.

5 Yet is his house and heart so large,
That millions more may come,

Nor could the wide assembling world
O'erfill the spacious room.

2 New every morning is the love
Our wakening and uprising prove;
Through sleep and darkness safely brought,
Restored to life and power and thought.
3 New mercies, each returning day,
Hover around us while we pray;
New perils past, new sins forgiven,
New thoughts of God, new hopes of heaven.
4 If on our daily course our mind
Be set to hallow all we find,

New treasures still, of countless price,
God will provide for sacrifice.

5 The trivial round, the common task
Will furnish all we ought to ask;
Room to deny ourselves; a road
To bring us daily nearer God.
6 Only, O Lord, in thy dear love,
Fit us for perfect rest above;
And help us, this and every day,
To live more nearly as we pray.

MORNING HYMN.

St. Ambrose-St. Pancras-Mainzer.

L.M.

1 O Jesus, Lord of heavenly grace, Thou brightness of thy Father's face; Thou fountain of eternal light,

Whose beams disperse the shades of night:

Send thy victorious word abroad,
And bring the strangers home.

6 We long to see the truth prevail;
That all the chosen race

May with one voice, and heart, and soul,
Sing thy redeeming grace.

394.

COMMUNION WITH CHRIST.
Watchman-Carlisle-St. Clair.

1 Jesus invites his saints

To meet around his board;
Here pardoned sinners meet and hold
Communion with their Lord.

2 Here we survey that love

S. M.

Which spoke in every breath,
Which crowned each action of his life,
And triumphed in his death.

3 Here let our hearts unite,
His glorious name to raise:
And holy joy fill every mind,
And every voice be praise.

395.

"REMEMBER ME.'

Harrington-Solomon-Messiah.

1 According to thy gracious word,
In meek humility,

This will I do, my dying Lord,
I will remember thee.

C. M.
