Motions (severally made) by Mr. Graves to reconsider the votes by which the amendments of the senate were agreed to were rejected.

A message was received from the senate by Mr. Hundley, who informed the house that the senate had passed senate bill entitled an act to repeal the act approved March 27th, 1874, entitled an act requiring the county judges of the counties of Albemarle, King William, Sussex and Surry to submit the question of continuing or repealing the fence law to the voters of their townships in their respective counties on certain conditions, No. 327; in which they respectfully request the concurrence of the house.

No. 311. House bill entitled an act for the assessment, levy and collection of taxes on railroad, canal, telegraph, transportation, insurance and other companies, for the support of the government, payment of interest on the public debt and support of public free schools, was, on motion of Mr. Riddlebarger, taken up out of its order on the calendar. The 1st, 2d, 3d, 4th and 5th amendments of the senate were agreed to. The question being on agreeing to the sixth amendment proposed by the senate, as follows:

Strike out 15th section and insert, in lieu thereof, the following: "Every such steamship company and non-resident owner of a steamboat shall pay, as a license for the privilege of doing business in this State, a sum equal to one per centum on the net amount of the receipts so returned to the auditor of public accounts, and all other of the said corporations created by the laws of another State or country, as aforesaid, shall pay as license for the aforesaid privilege a sum equal to two and one-half per centum on the gross receipts so returned to the auditor

of public accounts. The said licenses shall be paid to the said auditor quarterly on the days such returns are made to him."

No. 316. House bill to amend and re-enact an act approved March 28th, 1871, entitled an act providing for the assessment of the shares of banks or banking associations authorized by the laws of this State or of the United States and imposing a tax thereon, was, on motion of Mr. Anderson, taken up out of its order on the calendar.

The bill was read a second time and ordered to be engrossed to be read a third time.

The motion entered by Mr. Anderson to reconsider the vote by which senate bill No. 223, entitled an act making an annual appropriation to the sinking fund for the purchase of certain bonds of the State was dismissed, was rejected.

The motion entered by Mr. Morris to reconsider the vote by which senate bill No. 236, entitled an act to provide for the registration of bonds issued by local authorities in aid of internal, improvements, was rejected, was put and decided in the negative.

The motion entered by Mr. Hunter to reconsider the vote by which senate bill No. 212, entitled an act in relation to subscriptions to the stock of incorporated companies by counties, cities, towns or townships, was rejected, came up.

On motion of Mr. Armstrong, the motion to reconsider was laid on the table.

The motion entered by Mr. Lucas to reconsider the vote by which house bill No. 235, to exempt additional property from levy or distress upon contracts hereafter made, was dismissed, was rejected.

The motion entered by Mr. Massey to reconsider the vote by which senate bill No. 303, entitled an act to authorize the Fredericksburg and

Gordonsville railroad company to connect with the Chesapeake and Ohio railroad at or near Gordonsville, was ordered to its third reading, was rejected.

On motion of Mr. J. Horace Lacy, the title was amended by adding at end thereof the following: "and for other purposes."

Senate joint resolution requesting the courts of the several counties in which are now deposited the marriage license bond of Thomas Jetferson, the will of General Washington, and the will of Thaddeus Kosciusco, to transfer the documents to the secretary of the Commonwealth, for preservation among the historical papers in the State library, was read a third time and agreed to.

Mr. Jack Carter moved a reconsideration of the vote by which the joint resolution was agreed to, which was rejected.

No. 107. Senate bill entitled an act to increase the fees of sheriff's and other officers, and to amend and re-enact the 13th section of chapter 180 of the Code of 1873.
