10. SEC. I. Where cessions have been, or hereafter may be, made, by any state, of the jurisdiction of places, where light houses, beacons, buoys, or public piers, have been erected and fixed, or may, by law, be provided to be erected or fixed, with reservation, that process civil and criminal, issuing under the authority of such state, may be executed and served therein, such cessions shall be deemed sufficient, under the laws of the United States providing for the supporting or erecting of light houses, beacons, buoys, and public piers.

11. SEC. II. Where any state hath made, or shall make, a cession of jurisdiction for the purposes aforesaid, without reservation, all process civil and criminal, issuing under the authority of such state, or the United States, may be served and executed within the places, the jurisdiction of which has been so ceded, in the same manner as if no such cession had been made.

12. SEC. 1. The secretary of the treasury is authorised and directed, to provide by contract, which shall be approved by the president of the United States, for building a light house on Baker's island, near the entrance into the harbour of Salem and Beverly, in the state of Massachusetts, (as soon as a cession of the jurisdiction to the United States, over the land proper for the purpose, is made by the said state,) and to furnish the same with all necessary supplies: And also, to agree for the salaries, or wages, of the person or persons who may be appointed by the president, for the superintendence and care of the same: And the president is authorised to make the said appointments: The number or disposition of the light or lights, in the said light house, shall be such as may tend to distinguish it from others, as far as is practicable.

13. SEC. I. It shall be the duty of the secretary of the treasury, to provide by contract, which shall be approved by the president of the United States, for building a light house on Cape Cod, in the state of Massachusetts, (as soon as the necessary cession of land for the purpose shall be made by the said state to the United States,) and to furnish the same with all necessary supplies: And also, to agree for the salaries, or wages, of the person or persons who may be appointed by the president, for the superintendence and care of the same: And the number and disposition of the light or lights, in the said light house, shall be such as may tend

to distinguish it from others, as far as is practicable: And the light or lights on Gurnet Head, at the entrance of Plymouth harbour, shall be altered or diminished if necessary.

14. SEC. 1. The secretary of the treasury is authorised and directed to cause to be placed in and near the harbour of Boston, in the state of Massachusetts, upon such rocks, ledges or shoals, as the security of navigation there most requires to be distinguished, not exceeding six larger and ten smaller buoys, whereof the whole expense shall not exceed one thousand six hundred dollars.

15. SEC. 1. As soon as the jurisdiction of so much of the head land of Eaton's Neck, on Nassau Island, in the state of New York, as the president of the United States shall deem sufficient and most convenient for the purpose of erecting a light house, and its appurtenances, shall have been ceded to the United States, it shall be the duty of the secretary of the treasury to provide, by contract, I which shall be approved by the president of the United States, for building a light house thereon, and furnishing the same with all necessary supplies: And also, to agree for the salaries, or wages, of the person or persons who may be appointed by the president for the superintendence and care of building the said light house: And the president is hereby authorised to make the said appoint

16. SEC. 1. The secretary of the treasury is authorised and directed to cause to be placed six buoys on the shoals called the east and west banks, and the middle ground, near Sandy Hook, off the harbour of New York, and two buoys on the north and south points of Goat Island, near the entrance of the harbour of Newport, in the state of Rhode Island: And also, to cause to be placed such number of buoys as may be necessary for the security of the navigation in and near the harbour of Nantucket, in the state of Massachusetts.

17. SEC. 1. As soon as a cession shall be made by the state of Virginia to the United States, of the jurisdiction over a tract of land proper for the purpose, the secretary of the treasury be, and he is hereby authorized to provide, by contract, to be approved by the president of the United States, for building a light house on Old Point Comfort, in the said state, and to furnish the same with all necessary supplies; and also to agree for the salaries or wages of the person or persons who may be appointed by the president for the superintendence and care of the same; and that

the president be authorized to make the said appointments; and also, that the secretary of the treasury be authorized to cause six buoys to be placed near the entrance of Portland harbour, in the state of Massachusetts, at such places as, in his opinion, will best secure the navigation of the said port; and to cause the channel of Warren river, from Narraganset Bay to the port of Warren, in the state of Rhode Island, to be staked out and distinctly marked.

18. SEC. 1. As soon as the jurisdiction of such land at Gay Head on the western part of Martha's Vineyard, in the state of Massachusetts, as the president of the United States, shall deem sufficient and most proper for the accommodation of a light house shall have been ceeded to the United States, it shall be the duty of the secretary of the treasury, to provide by contract which shall be approved by the president, for building a light house thereon, and for furnishing the same with all necessary supplies; and also, to agree for the salaries and wages of the person or persons who may be appointed by the president, for the superintendence of the same; and the president is hereby authorized to make the said appointments.

19. SEC. 11. As soon as such land at the new inlet of Cape Fear river, in the state of North Carolina, as the president of the United States shall deem sufficient and most proper, whereon to erect a lighted beacon, shall have been ceded to the United States, together with the jurisdiction thereof, it shall be the duty of the secretary of the treasury, to provide by contract, for erecting a lighted beacon thereon; and also for placing a buoy in the inlet aforesaid, and for furnishing the same with all necessary supplies.

20. SEC. 1. The secretary of the treasury, under the direction of the president of the United States, is authorized, as soon as may be, to cause a beacon or monument to be erected on a ledge of rock called Boon Island, on the seacoast of the district of Maine.

ACT of April 29, 1800, 3 Bioren, 366.

21. SEC. 1. Under the direction of the secretary of the treasury, there shall be purchased, for the use of the United States, so much land contiguous to their territory, now occupied for the light house at New London as shall be sufficient for vaults and any other purpose, necessary for the better support of the said light house: Provided, That the legislature of the state of Connecticut shall cede to the United States the jurisdiction of such additional territory.

SEC. II. The secretary of the treasury is hereby authorized, at

his discretion, to procure a new lantern, with suitable distinction, and to cause convenient vaults to be erected, and the said light house at New London to be rebuilt.

22. SEC. 111. The light house lately erected at Clark's Point, so called, at the entrance of Accushnet river, within the town of New Bedford, in the state of Massachusetts, shall and may be supported at the expense of the United States: And the secretary of the treasury shall and may appoint a keeper thereof, and take further order respecting the same, as in other cases: Provided, That the property and jurisdiction of the said light house, and sufficient territory for the accommodation thereof, shall be fully ceded, and legally vested in the United States.

23. SEC. IV. Under the direction of the secretary of the trea sury, there shall be provided and maintained, at the expense of the United States, not exceeding six buoys to be placed within Buzzard's Bay, upon the most dangerous ledges there, in such manner as the safety of navigation in that bay requires.

24. SEC. v. The secretary of the treasury shall be, and he is hereby authorized and directed to cause a sufficient light house to be erected on Wigwam Point, so called, within the town of Gloucester, in the state of Massachusetts, where it will best serve the purpose of discovering the entrance of Anesquam harbour, and to appoint a keeper, and otherwise to provide for the support of such light house, at the expense of the United States. Provided, That sufficient land for the accommodation of such light house, together with the jurisdiction thereof, shall be duly and legally granted to, and vested in the United States.

25. SEC. 1. The secretary of the treasury is hereby authorized and directed to cause a sufficient light house to be erected on Cape Poge, (so called,) on Martha's Vineyard, in the state of Massachusetts, and to appoint a keeper, and otherwise to provide for the support of such light house, at the expense of the United Sates: Provided, That sufficient land for the accommodation of such light house, together with the jurisdiction thereof, shall be duly and legally granted to, and vested in the United States.

29. SEC. 1. As soon as a cession shall be made by the state of Virginia to the United States, of the jurisdiction over the land proper for the purpose, the secretary of the treasury is hereby authorized to provide, by contract, to be approved by the president of the United States, for building a light house on New Point Comfort, and another light house on Smith's Point, both in the state afosesaid, and to furnish the same with all necessary sup

plies, and also to agree for the salaries or wages of the persons, who may be appointed by the president for the superintendence and care of the same; and that the president be authorized to make the said appointments.

SEC. 11. As soon as a cession shall be made by the state of Connecticut, of the jurisdiction over the land proper for the purpose, the secretary is hereby authorized to provide, by contract, to be approved by the president of the United States, for building a light house on Faulkner's Island, in Long Island Sound, in the said state of Connecticut, and to furnish the same with all necessary supplies, and also to agree for the salaries or wages of the person or persons appointed by the president for the superintendence and care of the same; and that the president be authorized to make the said appointments.

SEC. 1. The secretary of the treasury is hereby authorized and directed to cause to be placed one buoy on the shoal south of Kinnimicut Point, and one buoy on a ledge called the Half Way Rock, in the Narraganset Bay, in the state of Rhode Island.

29. SEC. I. Under the direction of the secretary of the treasury, there shall be purchased for the use of the United States, the land whereon lately stood the light house on Gurnet Point, and so much land adjoining thereto as may be sufficient for vaults, and any other purpose necessary for the better support of the said light house.

SEC. 11. The secretary of the treasury is hereby authorized, at his discretion, to procure a new lantern, or lanterns, with suitable distinctions, and to cause convenient vaults to be erected; and the said light house, on the Gurnet, at the entrance on Plymouth harbour, to be rebuilt.

30. SEC. 11. The secretary of the treasury is authorized to cause to be rebuilt, of such height as he may deem expedient, the light house now situated on the eastern end of Newcastle Island, at the entrance of Piscataqua river, either on the land owned by the United States, or on Pollock Rock: Provided, That if built on Pollock Rock, the legislature of New Hampshire shall vest the property of the said rock in the United States, and cede the jurisdiction of the same.

31. SEC. IV. The secretary of the treasury is authorized and directed to cause a sufficient light house to be erected on Lynde's Point, at the mouth of Connecticut river, in the state of Connecticut, and to appoint a keeper, and otherwise provide for such light house, at the expense of the United States: Provided, That sufficient land for the accommodation of such light house can be purchased at a reasonable price, and the legislature of the state of Connecticut shall cede the jurisdiction over the same to the United States.
