Mr. Crawford's Latest Novel.

The Congregationalist, of Boston, says of "An American Politician:"of rare force and brightness. . . . It has decided power as a study of character.

It in some points is the best which he has written. It has a healthier and more inspiring tone, and many single passages are full Vanity Fair, of London, remarks:Mr. Crawford is a clever writer, and improves upon acquaintance. Vivid scenes of Indian and German and delicately finished sketches of Italian life he has already given us, and now a firmly handled picture of

The

America comes from his able pen. sentiments of an "American Politician" are of a quality to arouse the sympathy of all lovers of honest words and fair dealings.

Theology Made Interesting.

This

Theology has a profound fascination for a limited number of people, but it must be made interesting to enlist the attention of most readers. is a rare achievement, and the New York Times concedes that the Andover Review has won it. It says:

comes to us is quite so interesting from a popular point of view, and yet without any apparent effort to be so.

The Andover Review is making theology of interest to persons who are not theologians. No religious monthly periodical that The Springfield Republican remarks:The Andover Review for January improves upon itself in the best combination it has made of breadth, freshness, and va riety. . . . The book notices of the Review The Boston Beacon observes :

It is a great pleasure to call the attention of intelligent laymen to the Review, from whose pages they may learn how earnestly the theologians of Andover are engaged in making their own church more liberal, and

are full and judicial, taking in hand the weightiest books of recent issue, and attaching the responsibility in each case to the critic's name.

in introducing both scholarship and good sense from other churches. One cannot read the Andover Review without learning much about the best thoughts and endeavors of the traditional church of New England.

Some Heretics of Yesterday.

Dr. Herrick's book fulfills excellently the purpose for which it was prepared, and is already accepted as an admirable popular account of the leading religious reformers from the fifteenth century to the nineteenth, and of their distinctive opinions and work. The Christian Union says:

whose portraits are painted and whose stories are told. They are told sympathetically, of course, but not with partisanship. . . The book is an excellent addition to the Sunday library of the household, and is equally to be recommended, for the older readers, for the Sunday-school library.

This volume is the story of some of those heretics whose heresy consisted in a clearer conception of the errors and corruptions of their own time than their fellows possessed, or a greater courage in rebuking them. Tauler, Wiclif, Hus, Savonarola, Latimer, Cranmer, Melancthon. Knox, Calvin, Coligny, Brewster, and Wesley are the heretics The Interior, of Chicago, pronounces it "an exceedingly instructive and valuable book."

A Remarkable Book.

Speaking of Mr. Sinnett's "Esoteric Buddhism," recently reprinted in this country, the Boston Advertiser remarks:

Its popularity has carried the book through three English editions, and induced the author to prepare a special introduction to the American edition, in which he gives much additional information bearing on many of the problems dealt with. His original statements, however, were made with care, and have not been proved by living Indian philosophers to be incorrect They have given him the assurance that the book as it now

stands is a sound and trustworthy statement of the scheme of nature as understood by the initiates of occult science. In the East the inner spiritual meaning has never been put into books, but is confined to those who have the religious exaltation that enables them to receive it. It is this meaning which Mr. Sinnett has been the first to give to the Western world.
